Oooh – 11 new buildings are taking part in Cork Heritage Open Day this year

By Yay Cork August 8, 2026August 6, 2026

We do love a little nose around an old building.

And later this month, a total of 42 historic buildings will throw open their doors free of charge on Saturday, August 15th, giving the public a rare chance to explore some of the city’s most fascinating landmarks, many of which are usually off limits.

From a naval patrol ship to a former convent and one of Cork’s best-known castles, 11 new attractions are joining this year’s Cork Heritage Open Day as the popular annual event returns with its biggest programme yet.

Among the new additions this year are the LÉ Samuel Beckett, one of the Irish Naval Service’s most recognisable offshore patrol vessels, alongside Blackrock Castle Observatory, Graffiti Theatre, St Michael’s Church in Blackrock and Blarney Woollen Mills.

The event, organised by Cork City Council, marks its 21st year and kicks off National Heritage Week, which runs until August 23rd.

Visitors will also be able to go behind the scenes at familiar Cork institutions, with guided tours of The Everyman and Cork Opera House, while venues including Cork Circuit Courthouse, Heineken Ireland, the Masonic Hall, Triskel Christchurch, the National Sculpture Factory, St Fin Barre’s Cathedral and Cork City Hall will also welcome visitors.

Take a walk back in time

A packed programme of walking tours will delve into Cork’s medieval streets, the old city walls, Shandon and Patrick Street, while Cork historians and local experts will lead visitors through some of the city’s best-known neighbourhoods. Councillor Dan Boyle will also host a special walking tour marking the centenary of Capwell, the first major social housing development built after the foundation of the Irish Free State.

Talks, family activities and interactive events also feature throughout the day, with everything from medieval demonstrations and butter-making to genealogy talks and storytelling.

Heritage Officer Val Kavanagh said the event offers a unique opportunity to discover the stories behind some of Cork’s most significant buildings.

“For one day only, Cork’s most unique and historic buildings and spaces will open their doors and invite us in to hear the stories that shaped them and witness the beauty of their architecture,” she said.

While all events are free, some tours and talks require advance booking through the Cork Heritage Open Day website.
