Moveable Feast: 4 of the best food trucks in Cork

By Yay Cork July 1, 2019July 1, 2019

Not so long ago, the only hot meal you could get from a van in Ireland was a bag of chips.

Now hawk-eyed Cork foodies are permanently on the lookout for a roadside pop-up to eat at; the quality is that good.

The food truck movement is allowing local chefs to do what they do best; feed authentic dishes to the people, without the crushing worry of renting a premises and employing a fleet of staff. It’s a win/win; we get a fresh, exciting and unique meal handed to us by the very chef who made it (for a fraction of the price of that experience in a traditional restaurant).

The chefs get experience, time to grow and learn and tailor their offering while building their brand, but there’s an extra magic to the food truck experience too; location. Depending on where your favourite mobile kitchen is parked up for the day, the al fresco dining room could boast glittering views of the Atlantic ocean or the shade of an ancient forest.

If it were between four walls at all, it would be the best table in the house.

Here are four of the best to seek out this weekend:

1. THE RAMBLIN’ SOLE

Where: Clonakilty, farmer’s markets and various locations

Based in West Cork, the Ramblin’ Sole places an emphasis on locally caught fish with a tasty twist. From the hake with quinoa salad to the roasted potatoes smothered in chorizo sauce and lemon sole served in a toasted ciabatta, this is the dream find for seafood fans.

Check their next stop on Facebook.

2. SEVEN HEADS

Where: Garretstown Beach and various locations

Is there anything in the world more satisfying than a piping hot slice of fresh pizza after a bracing dip in the ocean? The experience is there for the taking in Garretstown when Seven Heads pulls up.

Serving steaming sourdough slices from their fabulous food truck (usually on weekends from 4:30pm until 8pm) Seven Heads make each pizza from scratch using the finest seasonal, sustainable, ethically sourced, organic, un-processed, local and freshly prepared ingredients.

Check their social media for the next locations.

3. SOUL FIX

Where: Warren Strand, Rosscarbery and various locations

The new kid on the block, Sharon McSweeney’s Soul Fix serves up colourful, local food with a spicy twist.

The star of the pulled pork taco is Caherbeg Free Range Pork, fresh from Rosscarbery in West Cork and topped with pickled red onion, guacamole, sour cream and a squeeze of fresh lime,

Leave room for a corn taco filled with Johnny Lynch’s buffalo halloumi, produced in Macroom using the milk of Ireland’s first and only herd of milking water buffalo.

Follow their Instagram feed for updates and locations.

4. FOOD DEPOT
Where: Courtmacsherry

Run by Masterchef 2014 champion Diana Dodog and her husband Mike, Food Depot dishes up warming meals every weekend from 12pm-4pm at Courtmacsherry Beach.

Expect hearty Hungarian bone broth stews with East Ferry chicken and egg pasta and stunning garden galettes, stuffed with leeks, roasted sweet potato, cauliflower, red onion, herbs and oozing with feta.
