Landmark new €7m Shandon Exchange to be completed by early 2028

It’s a huge boost for one of Cork’s most historic neighbourhoods.
Shandon is set for a major regeneration boost, with €7 million in funding awarded to Cork City Council under THRIVE-Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme.
The historic Butter Market and Weighmaster’s House will be restored and reimagined as Shandon Exchange – a landmark enterprise and community hub with cutting-edge studios, incubation spaces, workspaces and community facilities.

Owned by Cork City Council, the complex will be operated by Recreate Shandon CLG, who will manage the facilities. Construction on the complex is expected to commence in August 2026, with the project scheduled for completion by February 2028.
“This project demonstrates how heritage buildings can be reimagined as places of innovation and enterprise while remaining rooted in the local community.” said Chief Executive of Cork City Council, Valerie O’Sullivan.

“By combining enterprise, education and community use, the Shandon Exchange will act as a catalyst for sustainable growth, talent attraction and job creation on Cork’s northside, ensuring that the benefits extend well beyond the walls of this iconic site and that the Shandon area can reach its potential in the city.
Tony McNamara, Chair of Recreate Shandon CLG, said the project is about breathing new life into the Shandon area:
“Our vision for the Shandon Exchange is to create a space where enterprise, community, and education can come together to exchange ideas, develop new opportunities, and build a more sustainable future.” he added.
