Cork City Council is giving away free trees in three locations this week

Grab a shovel.
Anyone who’s ever complained about the lack of trees around Cork now has the perfect opportunity to actually do something about it this week.
As part of National Tree Week, Cork City Council will be giving away 5,000 free native trees to the public at locations across the city — meaning locals can quite literally plant the solution in their own gardens. The giveaway follows two hugely successful events in recent years, where more than 5,500 native trees found new homes around the city.
This year’s trees include a selection of native species such as hawthorn, holly, rowan, birch, alder, pine and hazel — all ideal for supporting local biodiversity and helping to boost Cork’s tree canopy.
Trees will be distributed by council staff at three locations across the city.
Where can I collect my free trees?
On Monday, March 9th, 2,000 trees will be available at Tramore Valley Park from 11am to 12:30pm, with another 2,000 trees available at Glen River Park (from the car park beside the old Keating’s Furniture building on Ballyhooly Road) during the same time window.
The remaining 1,000 trees, sponsored by the Office of Public Works, will be distributed on Wednesday, March 11th at the Glanmire Roads Depot from 10:30am to 1pm and 2pm to 3pm.
The initiative is organised in partnership with Coillte and the Tree Council of Ireland.
According to Cork City Council Tree Officer Thomas Kane, interest in the initiative has been growing year after year: “The enthusiasm over the past two years has been fantastic, and we’re excited to build on that momentum this National Tree Week.” he said.
“Each native tree planted is a meaningful investment in Cork’s future, supporting biodiversity and healthier green spaces. We encourage everyone to come along, pick up a tree, and help create a greener Cork.”
