Need some motivation to lose those lockdown pounds?
A new health and wellbeing initiative designed specifically for the needs of inactive overweight people is being piloted across Cork this autumn,
Project WeightLoss is a 12-week exercise intervention programme that’s open to any overweight individual aged over 18 (BMI>25 mostly) who wants to improve their health through regular physical activity and healthy eating.
The classes begin on the week of September 22nd in Castletownbere, Ballineen, Farranree, Ballintotis, Carrigaline, Mallow and Bantry with further locations to be confirmed. Developed by health and fitness professionals, they offer an “opportunity for inactive and overweight people to experience a supervised and structured exercise regime, appropriate to their ability and needs” with plenty of friendly support and encouragement along the way.
“With an ageing population and growing waiting lists, we need to rethink the delivery of health services and bring care directly into communities,” said Priscilla Lynch, Head of Health & Wellbeing at Cork Kerry Community Healthcare.
Got one hour, twice a week?
“By actively engaging with people who need support, we improve their quality of life and give them tools to manage their health and wellbeing”.
“Classes and one-to-one programmes have been developed which are suited to the general adult population. Older adults, inactive individuals and at-risk and vulnerable groups are most encouraged to participate, with referrals via GPs, hospitals and community health professionals.”
Participants must be available to attend a one-hour session twice a week for all 12 weeks. If selected, you will also be required to supply a letter from your GP confirming that you have no underlying health issues that would prevent you from taking part in the programme.
The cost of the programme is €140 for 12 weeks with sessions running twice weekly. Easy pay options are offered where participants can pay the €140 in two instalments of €70 at the beginning and before the six-week mark too.
