Babies are welcome at this new Stories of Matrescence meeting for mums in Skib’

Looking for a little social interaction during mat leave?
A new free peer support programme for mothers is set to launch in West Cork this September, offering a welcoming space to talk honestly about the often-overlooked transition into motherhood.
Stories of Matrescence will bring mothers together for eight fortnightly gatherings at Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre in Skibbereen, beginning on Thursday, September 3rd.
The initiative is built around the concept of matrescence – the physical, emotional and psychological changes involved in becoming a mother – and aims to help women connect through conversation inspired by poetry, art, literature and music. No artistic experience is required, and babies who are not yet mobile are welcome to attend with their mothers.
Organisers say the programme recognises the value of peer support, creating a space where mothers can share experiences, build friendships and realise they are not alone in navigating the challenges of early parenthood.
The project is being delivered by The Together Collective after securing funding through the Parents Peer Support Fund, which supports community-based initiatives for parents during the perinatal period.
Hosted at Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre, the free 90-minute sessions will run every fortnight from 11am. Mothers interested in taking part can register by emailing roisin@thetogethercollective.ie.
