Wet and wild: weather warning puts a damper on Valentine’s Day

It’s not the most romantic of starts.
Valentine’s Day dawned wet and windy this morning… with yet more wintery weather on the way tonight and a Status Yellow weather warning of gusts of up to 100kmph in some parts of the country.
Met Eireann is forecasting persistent rain for much of the morning, accompanied by strong southerly winds (leave the umbrella at home or risk a Mary Poppins-style exit into the sky).
Brighter conditions, with sunny spells and just a few scattered showers, are due later on and it will be mild for a time, with temperatures of between nine and 12 Celsius.
However, don’t be fooled by the faux spring conditions; it will turn very cold again later with sleet in some parts and a risk of some snow showers over high ground.
Minimum temperatures will drop as low as zero, with frost and a risk of icy patches in places sheltered from southwesterly winds.
According to the national forecaster, Thursday, will be “very cold and blustery, but bright, with sunny spells.”
Some scattered showers will occur, mainly of rain or sleet, but a few snow showers are possible over high ground.
Is it too late to team Valentine’s with a sneaky duvet day?
