Ready to switch up your fitness routine?
While gyms have reopened and PT sessions are back on the schedule, the lockdown showed us that working out at home is a more convenient way to get maximum results when time is tight.
According to Jonny Bruton and his wife Sarah, owners of Fitness Equipment Cork in the Ballinrea Business Park, Carrigaline, more of us than ever are choosing to skip the gym fees and invest in some pieces to use at home.
In fact, their new business is booming and it’s all down to the trend for alternative workouts.
A lockdown success story
“The business was forged from a need to find quality affordable equipment for ourselves to use during the lockdown,” Jonny, an ex-international hockey player, explains.
“We found it near impossible to find equipment anywhere. Most of the big retailers were out of stock so we decided to source our own equipment. We started selling small pieces of portable fitness equipment like resistance bands, pull-up bars, and power bands via Done Deal and it got incredibly busy.”
By the middle of summer 2020, the pair had launched a website and business was brisk as customers sought out a wide range of equipment, from dumbbells to kettlebells, barbells, plates, treadmills, bikes, and functional pieces of gym equipment like sandbags, plyometric boxes, and battle ropes.
Fitness is coming home
Creating a space to exercise at home, however small, can remove many of the barriers to getting fit. You can grab a session when the kids are in bed or at school, sweat it out to your favourite music on blast or catch up on your Netflix while improving your cardio on a smart foldable treadmill.
There are plenty of clever low-cost options on offer too. Take the Door Pull-Up Bar, for instance; at just €30, the bar uses leverage to stay in place so there are no screws required. Once it’s in place you can use it for pull-ups, push-ups, chin-ups, dips, and crunches.
The Resistance Band Set (€29.99) contains all you need to tone up, build muscle mass and burn body fat without leaving the house. The straps offer varying resistance, which allows you to combine them to reach your desired resistance level – from 4.5 kg (10lbs) and up to 45kg (100 lbs) – so they are suitable for both beginners and experienced heavy lifters.
“We are passionate about being a Cork-based business,” says Jonny.
“Our customers include the growing numbers of those wanting to work out at home as well as personal training studio owners and gym owners.”

The icing on the cake? You know you’re in good hands: Fitness Equipment Cork boasts almost 100 glowing reviews online and a five-star status on Trust Pilot: “93% of our customers classed us as excellent while 6% further percent classed us as ‘Great’.” says Jonny.
