To maintain a Blue Flag, the bathing water must comply with the standard of excellence set out in the 2006 EU Bathing Water Directive.
The seven Cork beaches to achieve the Blue Flag this year are:
- Barleycove
- Inchydoney
- Owenahincha
- Garrylucas
- Tragumna
- Redbarn
- Garretstown
A further 14 Cork beaches were awarded the National Green Coast Award, meaning they boast excellent water quality and have ‘effective and appropriate management to ensure the protection of the natural environment’.
This year’s shortlist includes newcomers Cadogan’s Strand, a small, stunningly beautiful inlet in the North East corner of Schull Harbour.
