Cork’s most stunning beer garden is back (and just in time for the heatwave)

By Yay Cork May 25, 2026

There’s nowhere in Ireland quite like it.

For somewhere so off the beaten track, Ahakista has a remarkable way of drawing summer crowds in search of a pint, a bite to eat, and a view worth lingering over.

And now its best-known spot is back for another season.

The Tin Pub—better known locally as The Ahakista Bar—has officially reopened for 2026, once again welcoming flip-flopped visitors to one of Ireland’s most scenic beer gardens.

The pub pairs laid-back charm with uninterrupted views over Dunmanus Bay. It is carefully run year after year by Margaret Whooley and her son Cormac, who have kept its character firmly intact.

Set on the Sheep’s Head Peninsula, The Tin Pub’s corrugated iron roof—believed to date back to its origins as a 1940s lodge for hotel workers—remains one of its defining features, but it’s the setting that really does the talking.

Out back, the beer garden rolls down towards the water, with sloping lawns dotted with picnic tables and shaded by mature trees. Flowerbeds and greenery frame the space, while Dunmanus Bay stretches out just beyond, making it easy to see why time tends to slow down here.

It’s a favourite with both locals and visitors, and has even attracted well-known fans over the years, including our very own Graham Norton, who owns a home nearby.

With the doors open again for summer, Ahakista’s most famous watering hole is once more ready for long evenings, slow pints, and that view that never really gets old.

To celebrate, management published a little poem (complete with a low-key warning to visiting tourists):

“We’re stocked and repainted

Scrubbed all the floors

Only a week left

Til we open our doors

Winter’s behind us

Summer is here

The staff are buzzing

Of that there’s no fear

Cormac is giddy

Some call him a nutter

He swears it’s genetic

‘All from the mother’

Margaret is busy

No messing around

‘Usually’ says Cormac

‘She’s fairly sound’

She loves meeting people

Listening to tales

Yet runs a tight ship

Tough as nails

Any tourists take note

(Locals will agree)

No late-night nursing of pints

Or all day to drink tea

So see you soon

The opening is on track

Kind regards,

The boss and Cormac
