Catch of the Day: 6 of the best fish and chips in Cork

It’s the ultimate alfresco dinner.
There’s something about the pre-summertime air, the fine days and our lifting spirits that leaves us craving proper fish and chips.
It doesn’t get any better than crisp cod or haddock sprinkled with loads of salt and a generous squeeze of lemon, sat atop a mound of hand-cut chips.
We are blessed in the Rebel county with some unreal fish and chip shops (some of which are so famous, now-divorced Kim and Kanye are said to have been spotted waiting in the queue during their Leeside honeymoon).
Even Hollywood actress Sofia Vergara and her husband Joe Manganiello are partial to a Jackie Lennox’s.
When the call of the tartar sauce becomes too loud to resist, here are six spots to hit:
1. The Fish Wife
This colourful chipper on McCurtain Street certainly stands out from the crowd. Customers praise their sizeable portions (serious value for money) and we recommend the seafood box if you’re feeling especially peckish.
The fish is always fresh and the service is fast.

2. Kiely’s of Cork
A relatively new addition to the Cork chipper scene, Kiely’s of Cork has racked up quite a reputation since its opening in January of this year on Maylor Street. Run by the foodie folk behind The Blue Haven Collection in Kinsale, this is a team that understands fish (they source from Union Hall and Ballycotton) and celebrates it in a variety of interesting ways.
As well as the catch of the day, you can order prawn scampi with chips, crunchy slaw, and togarashi mayo or crisp tempura haddock, served with tartare sauce and a lime wedge.
There are absolutely loads of coeliac options available here as well.

3. O’Reilly’s Fish & Chips, Glanmire
Out the road in Glanmire, O’Reilly’s Fish & Chips offer a wonderful selection of cod, hake, fillet burgers and even a fish platter as a sharing option.

4. CF Lennox’s
There’s no such thing as a quiet night on the counter at this Ballyphehane chipper. The takeaway won the prestigious award of Best Takeaway in Cork City & County in 2019.
It’s no wonder, considering the generous portions of fish and chunky chips.

5. Jackie Lennox’s
Cork’s official ‘chipper to the stars’, late last year Modern Family actress and husband Joe Manganiello visited Jackie Lennox’s to grab a munch, which they devoured by the pond in Fitzgerald’s Park.
Much-loved in Cork for their fish and chips (get your order ready in the queue, it’s a quick-fire round at the counter), Lennox’s is celebrating 70 years in business this year.

6. Chish n’ Fips
If you’re out along Crosshaven some breezy Sunday evening, head to Chish n’Fips for an Atlantic Fish Burger and gaze out onto the harbourfront as you enjoy your supper. All of their fish comes from local managed sustainable stocks and the chips, from fresh local potatoes, are peeled and cut daily.
