You can beat the heat at Cork’s outdoor swimming pool until the end of August

It was a late start this summer.
But swimmers have been enjoying a warm-weather dip in the outdoor swimming pool in Carraig Na Bhfear since July, and there’s still time to visit before the end of the season.
The pool opens to the public for one hour daily from Monday to Friday so you don’t need to be a member to use it – just pay at the gate on your way in. It’s also available from 2pm – 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays for 40-minute sessions and adult swim lanes are set out too from 6pm to 7pm daily.
Built by a group of volunteers in 1963, the pool was initially filled by gravity flow, the water coming down from a small dammed river nearby and kept fresh by continuous flow through the pool.
Improvements have been made over the years with pumps, filtration and chlorination. It was heated in 1996 and hot showers were installed in 1998. Last year the surrounding areas were given a modern overhaul, with new seating and upgraded changing rooms.
The pool is still run by volunteers and it’s open from now until August 26th. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates.
