It all began with a birthday cake.
When her little boy was about to celebrate another milestone, architect Izabella Sikora put her design and construction skills to work and baked him a 3D Batman cake.
What started as a hobby has quickly snowballed into a business; and one that not only supplies some of the most extraordinary wedding and event cakes in Ireland but also a Willy Wonka-worthy range of cupcakes, cake pops, macarons, sugar cookies and mini individual cake jars.
The level of detail is incredible. From building an edible construction site complete with five types of edible sand for a 60th, to painting the stripes on a zebra for a first birthday party creation, there is no idea that Izabella can’t turn into inspiration for a memorable cake.
Need an enormous burger-shaped chocolate cake stuffed with orange Swiss meringue buttercream? You got it. How about a white chocolate and raspberry teapot?
Izabella can make it happen.
Each finished cake is so mesmerising it’s almost a shame to cut it, but then you’d miss out on the decadent, handmade fillings.
Currently based in Silversprings where she works from a dedicated cake kitchen at her home, Izabella plans to open a cake design studio next year to cope with the growing demand for her creations.
Incredibly, the former architect only discovered her talent for eye-popping confectionery and sugarcraft two years ago.
“It all started by accident,” Izabella told Yay Cork.
“I always loved baking and being creative. However, after becoming a mum to a wonderful boy, Luca, my architectural career didn’t fit into my new lifestyle. I wanted to spend more time with my son and have flexible hours yet I wanted to stay creative. My son’s birthday was coming up and I decided to make a cake – the rest is history.”
Her business, Funky Cakes by Architect, was officially launched just over a year ago and Izabella, who hails from Poland and moved to Ireland 15 years ago, has been delighting event planners, parents and lucky kids ever since.
The fun begins with a planning session; Izabella discusses every design with her client, creating a detailed brief to work to before diving in for hours of piping, painting and building intricate fondant works of art.
“I have all types of cakes, from 3D sculptural pieces with internal support, artistic cakes and also elegant, sophisticated designs. I love working on all of them! It can take from four hours up to three days to make one cake. I’m obsessed with the smallest details and perfection in all my designs and that usually increases my hours.”
Tasty new trends
The magical world of cake making is always changing, but Izabella keeps an eye on the latest crazes while keeping her own creations as local as possible.
“I’m following the newest trends from Australia and New Zealand in my recent work,” Izabella explains.
“My beautiful buttercream finished cakes decorated with fresh flowers are a huge hit at the moment. I’m trying to change the perception that all cakes need to be covered in sugar paste. It is also important to me to support local businesses so I always get fresh flowers for my cakes from nearest flowers farms or cake toppers from local artists.”
Each cake is individually priced, but as a guide, Izabella’s celebration cakes start at €60, with sculptural pieces starting at €120 and wedding cakes available from €180.
