Watch where you park; spring tides are likely to cause flooding on Cork’s quays this weekend

Avoid low-lying quays.

That’s the advice from Cork City Council this weekend as motorists are warned that a high astronomical spring tide will occur at 6.40am on Saturday, February 13th, causing minor localised flooding.

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow rainfall warning for Cork, valid until noon on Saturday.

“Due to predicted very high rainfall late on Friday night (February 12th) and early Saturday morning (February 13th) there is a possibility that some rivers may burst their banks causing localised flooding at locations prone to this type of flooding.” said a Council spokesperson.

“People are asked to take extra care when walking or driving in such areas this Saturday and Sunday.”

Status Yellow – Rainfall warning-Cork, Kerry & Waterford. Valid: 00:01 Sat 13/02/2021 to 12:00 Sat 13/02/2021
Status: Yellow – Snow/Ice warning for Connacht, Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan & Donegal

“Do not walk or drive through flooded areas or rivers and please obey the warning signage which may be deployed on roads and paths. It is in place to protect your wellbeing and prevent you from entering a dangerous situation.”

Cork City Council has asked motorists to avoid parking in the following areas:

Morrison’s Quay
Fr. Mathew Quay
Fr. Mathew Street
Union Quay
Trinity Bridge
South Terrace
Rutland Street
Sawmill Street
Lavitts Quay
Kyrls Street
Kyrls Quay
Crosses Green
Proby’s Quay
Sharman Crawford St
Wandesford Quay

Cork City Council’s Flood Assessment Team is monitoring the situation closely and will continue to do so throughout the weekend.
