This free class will teach your teenager how to repair all their own stuff

Ever wished you had the skills to fix your own stuff?
We’re living in a world where it’s often easier to replace things than repair them — but a workshop in Cork next month is hoping to change that mindset.
A hands-on repair event taking place at Myross Wood House in Leap, West Cork, will invite people to bring along broken or worn-out items and learn how to fix them with the help of local experts.
Hosted by CECAS, the one-day session is designed to show just how easy it can be to mend everyday items rather than sending them to landfill.
The numbers behind the problem are pretty staggering. Globally, around 92 million tonnes of textile waste are created every year, while roughly 15 million bicycles are discarded annually — often not because they’re beyond repair, but simply because people no longer have the skills or confidence to fix them.
The workshop aims to bring those skills back.

Taking place on Thursday, April 2nd from 11am to 2pm, the event will guide participants through simple repair techniques in a relaxed, family-friendly setting. Attendees are encouraged to bring along items that need a little attention — whether that’s ripped jeans, a bike with a flat tyre, or a wobbly kitchen chair.
Local repair experts will be on hand to demonstrate practical techniques and help people learn the basics of fixing common household items themselves.
While the event is open to everyone, it’s expected to be particularly useful for teenagers aged 13–18 (free entry), offering a chance to pick up practical life skills that are becoming increasingly rare.
Adults can also attend for a small €5 fee, making it an affordable way to learn something new while also doing something good for the planet.
