Is movement linked to good mental health? Help these UCC researchers to find out

Brought to you by APC Microbiome Ireland.
Exercise is considered a powerful player in improving mood.
Now a new research study, MOVE 4 MOOD, is looking for volunteers in Cork to participate in this very important project, the findings of which will have huge significance for mental health research.
At APC Microbiome Ireland, a world-leading SFI Research Centre in University College Cork (UCC), researchers are dedicated to figuring out how our gut bacteria can influence the brain, including mental health. Dr Nathan Nuzum is currently leading a study investigating how exercise affects the brain and gut health of people with depression, aged between 18 and 59 years old.
“Recently, the bacteria, fungi, and viruses that reside in our gut (the so-called gut microbiome), have been recognised for their roles in contributing to our overall health.” Dr Nuzum told us.

“The aim of the study is to investigate how exercise influences the composition of the gut microbiome and how our gut bacteria communicate with the brain and potentially lead to benefits for people with depression.”
How to volunteer in Cork
The ‘Move4Mood’ study is seeking volunteers who will participate in four visits at UCC, where a comprehensive assessment of mood, cognitive function, and aerobic exercise capacity will be carried out.
After the first screening visit, eligible participants will be randomised into either the control or exercise group conditions, with the intervention period running for 12 weeks. Participants will receive a tailored aerobic physical activity program and participate in exercise.
“People know that exercise is, overall, good for them. But we are increasingly finding out that exercise is good for our mental health, not just our physical health,” added Dr Nuzum.
“However, why and how exercise is beneficial for mental health is not well understood and this study aims to better understand the reasons as to why exercise is beneficial for people with depression.”
