Here’s what’s happening on Africa Day in Fitzgerald’s Park

This is always a brilliant day out.
The weather’s looking good for Africa Day 2019 too, so there’s never been a better excuse to pack up a picnic or grab some coffees and hit Fitzgerald’s Park for the celebrations.
Met Éireann is predicting a mild and humid afternoon with temperatures of up to 19C, ideal conditions for the main Africa Day event on Saturday, May 25th, 2019.
The Family Fun Day will kick off with a flag-bearing event from Winthrop Street to Grand Parade at 12pm. Participants are invited to come ‘dressed in attire representing the diversity of Africa’ as everyone walks through Cork City towards Fitzgerald Park bearing flags from all countries in the continent.
A DJ will be on stage all afternoon in between acts from Cork’s African communities, featuring music and dance performances.
There’ll be interactive games and face painting for kids as well as food and craft stall too; plenty to entertain everyone for a chilled out day in the sunshine.
Africa Day is the official day of the African Union and marks African unity. The programme, coordinated and supported by Irish Aid at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Cork City Council, aims to highlight the scope and benefits of Ireland’s engagement with Africa and increase public awareness of Irish Aid’s development programme throughout Africa.
