Dr David Luke is coming to Cork to talk science and psychedelics

They’ve been used in shamanic rituals for thousands of years.
However western scientific research of psychoactive plants and fungi has only been explored in the last 100 years, and prohibition stalled the last 50 years of this.
There’s much to learn and if you’re intrigued by traditional and modern psychedelics and want to know more, including their potential benefits for mental health, Dr David Luke, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Greenwich, is en route to Cork to host a fascinating talk on the subject.
In an evening talk at Cyprus Avenue on Thursday, June 15th, 2023, Dr Luke, who has published more than 100 academic papers in this area, including ten books, will introduce the audience to the science of these traditional psychedelics along with their modern counterparts first synthesised in the 20th century.
Dr Luke will also touch upon the mental health applications of these drugs.
“Now that scientific research is resuming, what do psychedelics tell us about the weirder side of human consciousness, and what can be learned from the traditional shamanic practices with these substances?” he asks.
