Cork Rally for Housing planned as organisers slam ‘runaway rental rises’

The situation is getting worse.
As property prices creep ever higher and the number of available properties to rent continues to shrink to record lows, campaigners have organised another public protest in Cork.
The National Homeless and Housing Coalition is asking the public to join together “in a united show of solidarity to demand urgent action on the housing and homeless emergency” on Saturday, July 25th.
The rally will meet on the Grand Parade.
“The government allows the housing market to be a place where huge profits are made for the few while most of us are bled dry.” said a spokesperson for the group.
“Their policies and inaction have condemned whole generations to a lifetime of high rent with no chance of ever owning a home and at worst a life of housing insecurity and homelessness.
“Runaway rental rises mean this country is one of the most expensive in Europe in which to rent a home.”
The group is calling for public housing to be built on public land, an end to dereliction, evictions, and sell-offs to vulture funds as well as a national referendum on a constitutional right to housing.
Representatives from political parties, unions, housing action groups, and concerned citizens will speak on the day and there will also be a performance of singer-songwriter Martin Leahy’s new song ‘Everyone Should Have A Home’.
