A pop-up exhibition of illustrated birdhouses brings a special message to a Cork park

What does home mean to you?
A new pop-up exhibition will have you considering this and many more questions about belonging when it opens at Cork’s Lord Mayor’s Pavilion on September 7th.
Sample-Studios will present ‘Home is Where the Heart Is’ a touring exhibition of experimental illustrated birdhouses by Margaret Anne Suggs in Fitzgerald’s Park space until October 7th.

“The idea of ‘home’ is universal, but these works are rooted in the personal,” said Aoibhie McCarthy, artistic director at Sample-Studios.
As part of this exhibition, local visual artist and arts for early years specialist, Jane Hayes, has been commissioned by Sample-Studios to create sculptural works for early years audiences in response to the theme of ‘Home’ which will be exhibited alongside Margaret Anne Suggs’ work.
“With the perspective of being an outsider, the artist has established a home in Ireland, but still empathises with refugees, immigrants, and nomads who do not have the comfort of a home,” added Mc Carthy.
“The birdhouses relate to ideas of migration, the duality of belonging, and the ephemeral nature of home.”
Home is Where the Heart is will be open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday, 11am-5pm and Sunday 1pm-5pm.
