A Cork farm is delivering ‘wonky veg’ boxes to cut down on food waste

It’s all about the quest for perfection these days.
But do we really need our parsnips to be uniform in colour? Our spuds to be smooth-skinned and spherical?
Choosing to fill your fridge with wonky fruit and vegetables could actually save you some money if you’re not fussy about the odd knobbly carrot or deformed courgette.
The Cottage Garden, which delivers chemical-free vegetable boxes all over Cork, is now trialling a Wonky Veg Box.
A limited number of these Wonky Veg Boxes will be available from the Kinsale-based growers each week at a discount (€18.75 compared to the usual €25 cost), cutting down on food waste while reducing your grocery bill.
In fairness, once it’s all chopped and in the pot, who could tell the difference?
“They are 25% cheaper than our regular boxes, and include produce that may otherwise be rejected by us.” The Cottage Garden told their social media followers.
“They will be good to eat, but may have deformations, odd sizes, or pest damage that doesn’t affect the overall usability, etc.”
Sounds good to us.
The idea has already proven to be a hit and there’s only three left this week, so contact The Cottage Garden to put in your (wonky) order online here.
