Unlock your cúpla focal: The ‘Cup of Focals’ comedy tour is coming to these Cork pubs

By Yay Cork November 7, 2023November 7, 2023

This sounds like good craic.

Award-winning comedian Áine Gallagher is bringing her nationwide ‘Cup of Focals’ tour to Cork, with two dates announced on Leeside in November.

Using her deadpan and “divinely awkward” style of comedy, Ireland’s queen of offbeat is visiting Coughlan’s in Cork city and DeBarra’s in Clonakilty on a clear mission: to help her audiences have fun and lose their hang-ups around speaking the Irish language.

The tour will see Áine and her comedy pals Killian Sundermann and Fiona Frawley create new playgrounds for people to unlock their cúpla focal.

Using humour as the secret weapon, the intention is to disarm Irish audiences and help them to enjoy the language imperfectly in non-judgemental and fun environments.

Áine will not only perform onstage, but will also employ guerilla gaeilge tactics using her literal cup brimming with focals to engage the public in cafés and local hotspots.

Áine’s inspiration comes from her own personal journey of recurring Leaving Cert nightmares, fears of fluent speakers, and grammatical slip-ups.

“I’ve been on the Irish language journey for almost a decade, and it feels like something really special is bubbling this year.” the comedian explains.

“New forms of creative expression and modern takes on the language can be seen through new genres of music and through popular culture with an Cailín Ciùin and the delightful Paul Mescal speaking some Gaeilge briste on the red carpet.

“From a comedy perspective, I’ve sensed a greater energy from audiences and have noticed far more follow-ups after gigs, with people wanting to bí ag caint as Gaeilge.”

Catch the Cup of Focals tour in DeBarras on November 16th and in Coughlan’s on November 30th.
