Hey sweetie, these are Ireland’s most popular terms of endearment

By Yay Cork February 10, 2023February 10, 2023

What do you call your other half?

According to a new survey, ‘sweetie’, ‘darling’ and ‘love’ are among the most popular terms of endearment used among Irish couples, with an overwhelming 40 per cent of people saying they use the word ‘honey’ when referring to a loved one.

With just a few days to St Valentine’s Day, An Post has uncovered how we like to show our grá.

Some respondents are still opting to express their love as Gaeilge, with phrases like Mo Ghrá and Mo Stór doing the rounds, while a select three per cent still favour the uniquely Irish phrase Me Auld Segotia, most commonly used in Dublin, to mean a special friend or loved one.

Social media respondents were fonder of what might be considered more traditional endearments including My Rock, My Petal and firm favourite, Me ‘Aul Flower.

“St Valentine’s Day is about telling those closest to you that you love them, in your own unique way,” said Richard Miley of An Post.

“Share the love this St Valentine’s Day and remember you have until early Monday morning to be sure of delivery to loved ones across the country by Tuesday 14th of February.”

Designed by Irish artist Alan Dunne, An Post’s Love Stamp is a colourful papercraft illustration, available year-round in booklets of ten (€13.50) at all 900 Post Offices nationwide.
