It’s true: McDonalds is about to start reopening its Irish drive-thrus

Dreaming of a McNuggets four-piece?

McDonald’s has announced it’s about to start reopening its Irish restaurants, with the first drive-thrus due to open on May 20th.

The chain’s outlets in Dublin will be the first in line to reopen after the Covid-19 lockdown, with other outlets in Cork and around the country expected to be added in the following weeks until every restaurant is operational by early June.

Today the company confirmed that spending at these restaurants will be capped at €30 per car during the trial run, with contactless payment encouraged.

“Eight weeks ago, we took the decision to close our entire restaurant estate, an unprecedented decision taken in the best interests of our employees and customers,” Paul Pomroy, CEO of McDonald’s UK and Ireland said.

“In the last few days, updated government guidance has been shared in both the UK and Ireland, which makes it clear that takeaways and deliveries can operate.

“In line with government guidance I can today announce we will pilot reopening 6 Drive-Thru restaurants in the Dublin area on Wednesday, 20th May and we will confirm the locations next week.

“Moving in step with government guidelines, we plan to reopen all our Drive-Thrus by early June across the UK and Ireland.”

Mr Pomroy said customers should expect some queues at busier sites and some changes at the counter too: “Our restaurants will look different,” he said, “with Perspex screens at our Drive-Thru windows and employees wearing protective equipment.”
