You can pick up bare root native trees for just €1 at this Trees Please planting party

Fancy a bit of guerilla gardening?

Rebel Reads is the venue for a fun spring event where visitors can pick up native Irish trees to plant locally for just €1 each.

Set up in 2019, Trees Please is run by volunteers who propagate, distribute, and plant as many native trees as possible to improve the ecosystem, and biodiversity and enhance the beauty of our surroundings. Their trees are grown from seed at several tree nurseries around Cork city.

On Saturday and Sunday, March 2nd and 3rd, the group will be setting up at Rebel Reads in the Marina Commercial Park and inviting the public to come and buy native Irish trees for gardens and community projects.

All you need to bring is a sturdy plastic bag.

“We’re allowing up to 50 trees per person with a suggested donation of €1 per tree. We’ll have tea and cakes and a tree-ific creative performance at 3pm on the Saturday (if you would like to perform something drop us a message!).” the organisers announced on Instagram.

A variety of trees will be distributed on a first-come first-served basis, including alder, aspen, buckthorn, elder, rowan, wild cherry, and willow.

“The trees would need to be planted straight away as we are nearing the end of the dormant season,” they added.

“We can show you how to plant them when you collect them. Start thinking about where you would like to plant them. You can also plant a hedge by planting the trees around 30cm apart.”

The event will run from 11am to 6pm on Saturday, March 2nd, and 1pm to 5pm on Sunday, March 3rd.
