You can catch a glorious open-air opera recital in this Youghal park on Saturday

Forget everything you think you know about opera.
This year’s Blackwater Valley Opera Festival is proving it’s not just for tuxedos, theatre buffs and people who know Italian.
The festival’s hugely popular Recitals Series is back for 2026, bringing stunning live music to some of the most beautiful locations across Cork and Waterford all week— from grand country houses and cathedrals to relaxed open-air lunchtime performances in local towns.
And the best part? It’s free, and you don’t need to be an opera expert to enjoy it.
Think less “stuffy concert hall” and more picnic vibes, gorgeous scenery and seriously talented singers performing music that’s emotional, dramatic and surprisingly accessible.
This year’s programme includes free pop-up open-air recitals in Youghal (this Saturday, May 30th at Green Park – 12pm) and Castlemartyr on Monday (already sold out).
The outdoor concerts are especially aimed at newcomers — giving people a chance to experience classical and opera highlights in a fun, informal setting without spending a fortune.
Festival organisers say the free lunchtime performances are all about bringing world-class music into local communities and making opera feel welcoming for everyone.
Attendance at the BVOF Open Air recitals is free, though pre-booking is essential over here.
