Watching Cheap Irish Houses? Here are 10 Cork properties that might interest you

By Katie Mythen-Lynch May 14, 2020May 14, 2020

We’re addicted to this show.

If you’re on the hunt for a new home and you’re keeping an open mind about how to get the best bang for your property buck, RTÉ’s Cheap Irish Houses is the perfect TV binge.

Host Maggie Molloy and Cork civil engineer Kieran McCarthy are the property gurus Ireland needs right now. The no-nonsense illustrator has taken the journey herself, turning an €80k dilapidated country cottage with nine (yes NINE) outbuildings into a lifestyle dream home on a shoestring budget.

Meanwhile, Kieran takes each featured property on the show right down to brass tacks, explaining how each common issue (mould, damp, sagging roofs and battered windows) can be affordably fixed or replaced to keep it sound for another century.

It’s not for everyone; renovating an old building is messy and time-consuming work and mistakes can be costly, but with the right expert advice and a cool head, there’s every chance you could turn a ruin into a bargain dream home.

If you’re on the hunt for your own cheap Irish house, here are ten to consider in Cork:

1. Main Street, Glanworth, Co. Cork

Asking price: €49,950

If you’ve got the chops to take it on, this beautiful stone building in Glanworth is suitable for conversion into four individual townhouses. The property sits on a large site to the side and rear, which is suitable for further development and parking.

2. Ard Mhuire, Cooney’s Field, Myrtleville, Co. Cork

Asking price: €115,000

Sea views in Myrtleville don’t come much cheaper than this. A modernised two-bedroom bungalow overlooking Cork Harbour and Power Head, this charming property needs little more than a paint job and a floorboard touch up before you move in. It’s a five-minute walk to Myrtleville beach too.

3. Carrigthomas, Ballinagree, Macroom, West Cork

Asking price: €105,000

Surrounded by mature trees in its own private courtyard, this four-bedroom farmhouse on 2.3 acres is a ten-minute drive from Macroom. It’s in need of extensive renovation, but it comes with a range of lovely stone outbuildings, which could be patched up for any number of uses.

4. 3 Clancool House, Bandon, West Cork

Asking price: €99,950

Dating back to the mid-1800s, this is the ideal opportunity to stamp your own mark on a little bit of Bandon history. Clancool House needs some sympathetic restoration but put in the work and you could nab yourself a four-bedroom period property with a huge garden for less than €100k.

5. Coolmountain, Dunmanway, West Cork

Asking price: €69,000

Ready to answer the call of the wild? This two-bedroom, one-bathroom cabin and is set on a picturesque mountainside and comes with a Rayburn stove, wood stove, double bed and other bits and pieces of furniture. The rural location of this property makes it perfect for anyone seeking proper peace and quiet.

6. Derryvillane, Glanworth, Co. Cork

Asking price: €75,000

This adorable traditional ‘two up two down’ roadside cottage is located around 2.5 miles from the village of Glanworth and a short drive from Fermoy and Mitchelstown. Two stone outhouses are an added bonus and the cottage stands on one acre with excellent road frontage.

7. Clontead More, Coachford, Co. Cork

Asking price: €95,000

With all the basics in working order, this one-bedroom detached bungalow would make for an ideal starter home, with ample room for expansion in the future. It’s a short drive to the village of Coachford.

8. Ballyporeen, Mitchelstown, Co. Cork

Asking price: €15,000

Keep an open mind. If you want to make the average deposit stretch far enough to leave you mortgage-free, this derelict dwelling comes with a yard and side access, which would make bringing in a team of builders a breeze.

9. 86 Blarney Street, Cork City, Cork City

Asking price: €100,000

Whilst in need of renovation, this three-bedroom mid-terraced property has an enclosed back garden and separate kitchen, dining and living rooms. It’s in walking distance to schools, shops and hospitals so with a little love it could be turned into a sweet city base.

10. 4 Courtney’s Avenue, Roman Street, Cork City

Asking price: €110,000

With one bedroom and one bathroom, this property boasts views of the Shandon Steeple and a small yard out the back. With a bit of clever re-working, it could be a cosy home within strolling distance of Cork City.
