Watch one of the best wedding rom coms ever at this Cork City cinema

‘You’re terrible Muriel.’
If that line rings a bell, chances are you’re familiar with the 1994 cult classic Muriel’s Wedding.
Now, as the Aussie film turns 30, the Triskel Cinema is screening the original in full from Sunday, June 8th to Wednesday, June 11th on South Main Street, Cork City.
Chris O’Neill, Head of Cinema at Triskel Arts Centre, is known for his eclectic and innovative cinema seasons where he spotlights work by particular directors or of specific genres. Already this year, he has featured work by the late David Lynch, hosted seasons of Merchant Ivory films and music documentaries, and celebrated the Before Sunrise Trilogy.
“I wanted to commemorate the late Val Kilmer by showing two of his most powerful films – Heat and The Doors, and this combines wonderfully with a number of other cult and classic 90s films that deserve celebrating: Muriel’s Wedding and La Haine, which both turn 30 this year; and Showgirls, a flop on its release that has become a cult classic.” said O’Neill.

Muriel’s Wedding, directed by P.J. Hogan, stars Toni Collette in the titular role of Muriel Heslop, a socially awkward young woman living in the fictional small town of Porpoise Spit, Australia. She dreams of having a glamorous wedding as an escape from her dysfunctional family, her domineering politician father who constantly belittles her, and her cruel, shallow “friends” who ridicule her.
When she reconnects with an old school acquaintance named Rhonda, they form a strong friendship and move to Sydney together, where Muriel tries to reinvent herself.
Tickets for 4pm and 8pm showings are on sale now (€10.50) here.
