Wanna be queen for the day? Rent this castle for a royal weekender in East Cork

Listen.
If there’s one thing the Oscar-tipped movie The Favourite left us yearning for (besides cake, oddly) it was castle life.
The turrets; the flagstone floors; the four poster beds; the grandeur – why were we born in the wrong era?
But wait; all is not lost. Some frantic investigations have turned up a way to immerse yourself in a royal fantasy without leaving Cork.
Just two miles from Midleton, there’s a four story, 16th century castle that you can rent for a weekend.
It’s not quite a palace, but at a relatively reasonable rate of €116, Ballintotis Castle can be your own private empire for as long as you wish.
It’s not all 16th Century living. The castle is recently renovated and now features a roof terrace and a glass roof on the third floor that’s perfect for stargazing.
There’s one small double four poster bed (you can draw straws for that one), a single bed and camp beds available.
Be warned; it’s not the best rental for very young children or those with mobility issues; the stairs are very steep.
The wifi isn’t too strong either so take the opportunity to soak in the bath (it’s located in a wooden trunk) and sip wine by candlelight near a crackling fire.
Make sure you bring along somebody who is willing to do your bidding. Because sometimes a lady likes to have some fun.
