With any luck, this is the future.
If you’ve been steadfastly carting around your trusty keep cup for hot beverages, but often forget to give it a rinse between drinks, then a new invention that’s just appeared in University College Cork will likely impress you.
A new Fresh Cup machine has been installed in UCC’s restaurant, allowing students and visitors to clean their reusable cups instead of paying for new ones.
No more ‘old coffee’ smell or grimy lids? Result.
The first of our @UCC Fresh Cup machines has now been installed in the main restaurant! 30 seconds to a fully cleaned and sanitized reusable cup! We’re well on our way to #plasticfreeUCC! pic.twitter.com/QsDxkOyOYW

UCC has imposed a complete ban on disposable coffee cups in many parts of the campus, with reusable cups made from bamboo for sale at the Library Services desk at €4 each.
Some day, we may even see Cork’s many coffee shops going in the same direction.
According to UCC Sustainability Officer, Dr Maria Kirrane, the Fresh Cup machines, which fully clean and sanitise a reusable cup in 30 seconds, mean the university is well on its way to becoming plastic free.
