This secret West Cork waterfall has a backstory that will give you goosebumps

Planning a little trip to West Cork soon?
If you love uncovering hidden gems, make sure you visit Poll Mór, a spectacular yet secret waterfall tucked away behind Ger’s Wild Atlantic Diner in the charming village of Leap.
This enchanting cascade tumbles dramatically down moss-covered cliffs — a perfect photo opportunity for nature lovers and history buffs alike.
A Leap into History
According to local legend, this very spot was the stage for one of West Cork’s most daring escapes. After the Battle of Kinsale in 1601, Chieftain O’Donovan found himself pursued by English forces. In a heart-stopping moment of bravery, he spurred his horse to leap across the 25-foot chasm, escaping capture.
That incredible feat gave the place its Irish name, Léim Uí Dhonnabháin — “The Leap of O’Donovan” — and inspired the saying “Beyond the Leap, beyond the Law”, symbolising freedom and defiance.
Breathtaking views (and safe viewing points for all the family)
Today, visitors can experience the thrill from a safe vantage point: a metal viewing platform perched high above the gorge, offering spectacular views of the babbling brook far below.
Ideal if you’re taking the kids or your Nan.
Nature’s wonderland
The area around Leap is teeming with wildlife — keep your eyes peeled for playful otters, elegant herons, and even the occasional shimmering kingfisher. In spring, the landscape is a carpet of bluebells, wild garlic, and lush ferns.
