This is the cheapest European capital city for a weekend break

Trying to decide where to stay on your city break or holiday?
New research shows it’s always worth pricing Airbnb properties before checking yourself into the top rated hotel, even if you get a deal on the price.
Money-saving website Vouchercloud have listed the best value Airbnbs across Europe based on the price of an equivalent stay in a 3* hotel, with Malta, Portugal and the often-expensive Switzerland topping the tables.
The cheapest capital city to visit is Tirana in Albania, with Airbnbs averaging at €30 per night and €41 per night for a hotel.
Skopje in Macedonia and Ankara, Turkey were also amongst the cheapest locations to stay, with both hotels and Airbnbs between €32 and €42 per night.
The most expensive locations for accommodation are Reykjavik, Iceland (Airbnb = €121, hotels = €152), London, UK (Airbnb = €103, hotels = €107) and Stockholm, Sweden (Airbnb €103, hotels = €117).
Only seven of the 48 locations listed had hotels cheaper than Airbnbs (Andorra, Latvia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Estonia).
The following destinations were found to have the most eye-watering gaps between the price of an Airbnb compared to a hotel:
- Malta (Valletta) has a massive 227% increase from Airbnb (€61) to hotels at €138.
- Portugal (Lisbon) increases by 194% from its €63 Airbnb prices to hotels for €121
- Switzerland (Bern) features a 182% increase, from Airbnbs at €80 and €145 hotels.
