This fairytale waterfall and loop walk is perfect for a weekend adventure

Weekends are for exploring.
And if you’ve been staring out the office window dreaming of escaping the city for a few hours, we’ve found the perfect excuse to get out and explore.
Tucked away in the Cork countryside, hidden among woodland and winding trails, Ballard Waterfall looks like something straight out of a fairytale — and surprisingly, plenty of Corkonians still haven’t heard of it.
Located near Mitchelstown, around an hour’s drive from Cork City, the waterfall sits at the end of a scenic woodland walk that feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The walk itself is part of a 5km loop, making it ideal for anyone looking to stretch their legs without committing to a full-day hike. The route winds through peaceful countryside and forest paths before eventually revealing the waterfall, which tumbles through a rocky gorge surrounded by lush greenery.
Cork explorer Sally Kirby of @vintagefreespirit took a ramble down this week and now we all want to go:

With the good weather finally making an appearance, it’s the perfect time to pack a coffee, grab a few friends and head off for a morning adventure. Better still, Mitchelstown is nearby if you fancy rewarding yourself with lunch after your walk.
Things to know before you go
Parts of the route are on quiet country roads, too, so watch out for traffic. The path near the waterfall can become muddy or slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
