Fancy escaping the city? This gorgeous West Cork festival is calling your name

Enjoy sea air, long walks, cosy pubs, and good food?
If that sounds like your idea of heaven, Schull Land & Sea Heritage Weekend should be on your radar this month.
Taking place from September 26th to 27th, the new festival is bringing together the best of Schull’s maritime history, farming heritage, wildlife and community spirit for two days of events around the village.
And there’s loads to get stuck into.
You can head off on guided walks along the Fastnet Trails, explore the coastline and local wildlife, or wander around the village discovering stories about the people and places that have shaped Schull.

One of the weekend’s highlights will be a series of Speaker’s Corners, with local people sharing stories about everything from traditional West Cork farming and fishing to blacksmithing, the old Schull railway station and what life was actually like living on Fastnet Rock Lighthouse.
There’ll also be talks about sailing from Schull to the Azores and back, the history of Gabriel Rangers GAA Club and life on Long Island.
But you won’t be spending the whole weekend listening quietly in a room.
Down at the harbour, things will get considerably more lively, with Team Racing Sailing, traditional Yawl rowing trials, open-water swimming, coastal foraging and guided birdwatching trips.
There’ll even be beach saunas and special menus celebrating ingredients from land and sea, while the evening programme will bring the traditional West Cork hospitality into full swing, with sea shanties, storytelling and singing sessions, followed by a proper community Céilí.
Basically, if your ideal weekend involves learning something new, eating very well and dancing with people you’ve never met before, you’re sorted.
Sunday will round things off with the Schull Country Market, a family-friendly landmarks trail and more heritage talks before a historical trail to Long Island.
So, if Cork city life has you craving a bit of fresh air and sea views, Schull might be exactly where you need to be.
Most events are free, and you can book your spots here.
