Craving a couples trip?
If you’ve only secured a babysitter for a night or two, you’ve got to make it special.
Go all out. Snatch back a bit of romance while it’s going.
Once secret spot that’s been topping ‘best places to stay’ lists for a while now is nestled in the countryside just ten minutes from Clonakilty… and there’s a reason guests keep it to themselves.
There are six bedroom suites, all super luxurious, but the Cathedral Suite in the main house is giving us major fairytale feels. With exposed 1700s roof beams and a free-standing stone bathtub, there are few places more glamourous to enjoy a long soak before sinking between the silky soft sheets…
It’s got rock ‘n’ roll credentials too…
The former home of rocker Noel Redding, best known as the bass player for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Dunowen House is a little slice of paradise that has offered a haven for many a music legend over the years. In fact, you might feel those vibes around the grounds still; after his death in May 2003, Redding’s ashes were interred in the garden.
Elsewhere in the house, the decor is luxe but relaxed.
The walls are tastefully decorated with items of rock and roll memorabilia, including original concert posters, vintage magazines and music and various pieces unearthed by owner Kela Hodgins in an old barn on the property.
Surrounded by secluded coves, sandy beaches and rocky cliffs, there’s loads to explore on foot during the day. Located just 10 minutes from bustling Clonakilty, pencil in a trip to town for lunch or book a sea kayaking trip or a surfing lesson.
On your return, you can arrange for a grazing platter of Gubbeen cheese, charcuterie, fresh brown bread and Dunowen House chutney to enjoy with a bottle of wine on the terrace.
Larger groups can rent Orchard Cottage, a characterful little abode dating from the 1800s and located in the walled garden beside Dunowen House.
With three cosy bedrooms, two bathrooms, a wood-burning stove and an open plan kitchen living area, Orchard Cottage sleeps five guests from €120 per night mid-week or €150 per night (self-catering) stays.
The Dunowen House team can even arrange for private catering so you can kick back and enjoy the property instead of heading out for dinner.
Predictably, the place is booked out for the rest of August but there are some available dates in September and October so get on it if you fancy an autumn escape. Check out the booking calendar here.
