This beachside fish and chip shop has a scenic new tented area for cosy lunches

January; it’s all about brisk walks and fresh air.
But life is for living and if you need a little incentive to lure you off the sofa for some exercise in the coming weeks, one popular eatery is the ideal pick.
Peter and Elaine Shanahan, the duo behind The Fish Basket on Long Strand in Castlefreke, have just added a spacious tented outdoor area where you can enjoy your reward lunch or dinner al fresco without being battered by the wind and rain.
You can also nab a seat indoors if you prefer, but there’s something about devouring fish and chips outdoors that’s hard to beat, especially when you watch the waves roll in over the sand as you chow down.

If you’re up and about early you can swing by for breakfast and coffee on Sundays (there’s a meaty breakfast bap or a nutritious avocado toast with eggs and feta on the go if you’re feeling saintly).
Work up an appetite for lunch or dinner (from 12.30pm) and their famous fresh catch of the day comes straight from Glenmar in nearby Union Hall, served up with chips, peas, and tartare sauce.
The Fish Basket is open Saturdays and Sundays throughout January from 9am to 5pm.
