Looking for a way to make some extra income?
A local team of health researchers is seeking a number of pre-diabetic volunteers to take part in a paid study over the coming months.
The Atlantia Food Clinical Trials study is evaluating the effect of a twice-daily soluble fibre supplement on long-term glucose control in prediabetic adults.
Volunteers with high blood sugar and aged between 18 and 70 can apply to take part in the research, with each successful candidate receiving €650 on completion.
“The study will involve seven visits over the course of five months,” said Elaine Hegarty, Project Manager at Atlantia.
“Over the course of the study, you will wear a continuous glucose monitor (Freestyle Libre), track your glucose readings, consume a probiotic or placebo daily, for 12 weeks, and do Oral Glucose Tolerance Tests (OGTT).
“You will also be asked to keep diet and sleep journals and provide stool samples for some of the visits.”
Here’s what to expect
The first visit is called a pre-screening visit when basic measurements like your weight, height, and blood pressure will be taken. You will also be asked questions about your medical history and general health and wellbeing.
“At this visit, there will also be a fasting blood test. The blood test will measure your HbA1C level, blood counts, blood chemistry, and glucose.” Hegarty continued.
“You will also be required to provide four stool samples, which you are given a stool sample kit for and full instructions. You will perform these at home and then return the sample at your next visit.”
Once you have completed all study visits, you will receive €650 for your time.
