The Shandon Mile Walk is a midweek stroll with a side of local history

Fancy a midweek stroll with benefits?
This upcoming walking tour might be just the thing.
Cork City Council is inviting people to lace up their walking shoes for A Shandon Mile Walk, a relaxed guided stroll through one of the city’s most historic neighbourhoods. The event takes place on Wednesday, April 29th from 10am to 12pm, starting at Daunt Square.
The walk will take participants on a leisurely one-mile route through the iconic Shandon district — an area packed with centuries of Cork history, character and culture. From its winding streets to its colourful houses, Shandon has long been one of the city’s most distinctive quarters.
Of course, no mention of Shandon would be complete without its most famous landmark, St Anne’s Church, Shandon, home to the legendary Shandon Bells. The church tower has watched over the northside since the early 18th century, and its distinctive red sandstone and white limestone walls earned it the local nickname “the four-faced liar” because each clock face once told a slightly different time.

During the walk, participants will hear stories about the area’s past — from its roots as a busy merchant quarter to its role in Cork’s butter trade, when nearby The Butter Museum marked the city’s importance as one of the largest butter markets in the world.
The event is designed to be welcoming and social, making it a great option for people who might be new to Cork and want to explore the city while meeting others. Whether you’re a longtime local who hasn’t properly explored Shandon in years, or someone who’s recently moved to the area, the walk offers a chance to slow down and see a familiar part of the city in a new light.
Best of all, it’s just a mile — so it’s very much about enjoying the atmosphere rather than clocking up serious steps.
With good company, a bit of local lore and one of Cork’s most colourful neighbourhoods as the backdrop, it’s a lovely way to spend a spring morning. Reserve a free spot here.
