Bored with your usual walking route?
Three months into Covid-19 travel restrictions, we’re all getting a little tired of taking the same old strolls around our neighbourhoods.
But as soon as the rules ease up, The Glucksman is planning a treat for the Cork public.
Organised as part of Cork Midsummer, New Light is a series of exploratory walks across Cork city, with a guide that will be available to download on June 10th, 2020.
Each walk will feature the eight artworks presented on billboard sites, enabling safe social distance viewing and an “unfolding exploration” of the project. Each artwork is also available as a postcard in order to connect with those unable to view the billboard sites in person.
Featured artists will include Cork-based printmaker Shane O’Driscoll, Emma O’Hara, Leanne McDonagh, Mark Kent and Carol Anne Connolly.
‘What was once familiar…’
Considering ideas of “regeneration and recuperation, locality and civic space, and the intimate relationship to our close surroundings,” the exhibition is an invitation to reacquaint yourself with Cork’s pathways and passages.
“In venturing outside after a period of confinement and isolation, we take notice of our surroundings in different ways.” explained the team behind the project.
“We become aware of sights and smells, the vibrancy of colours and the play of light, and observe what was once familiar with a reinvigorated sense of appreciation. We learn to see the everyday in a new light, with fresh eyes and a renewed attention to detail.”
The exhibition will be situated in five different locations. These routes are:
- UCC Ceremonial Entrance – Western Road (total distance 500m)
- North Monastery Road – Watercourse Road (total distance 600m)
- Maylor Street – Summerhill North (total distance 500m)
- Bandon Road – Lough Road – Pouladuff Road (total distance 420m)
- Southern Road – Sawmill Street (total distance 500m)
New Light postcards will be available in city centre locations and disseminated to communities that are cocooning. Postcard packs will also be available to purchase online through the Glucksman website and social media.
