Storm Ellen: Emergency crews battle fallen trees, floods and power outages

By Yay Cork August 20, 2020August 20, 2020

The clean-up has begun.

Storm Ellen ripped through Cork between 9.30pm and midnight last night, leaving a trail of destruction in her wake.

Emergency crews are hauling fallen trees from roads all over Cork this morning, as 40,000 householders wait for their electricity to be restored.

Areas to avoid this morning include the Inniscarra Road, where there is a tree down at the Inniscarra Bar, the Model Farm Road and Shanakiel, where a fallen tree is reportedly resting on cables.

Workers are clearing debris from the R627 Midleton to Tallow Road, which is currently impassable, and there are also trees down between Garryvoe and Ladysbridge.

Meanwhile, the traffic lights are out of order outside Cork University Hospital, with motorists advised to take extra care when driving in the area.

Cork City Fire Crews has a busy night, responding to several incidents across the city during the storm.

The ESB is appealing to the public to stay clear of fallen electricity lines and report any damage to electricity infrastructure by calling 1800 372 999. Estimated power restoration times will be available later this morning and will be updated regularly available on the PowerCheck App.

Householders who have lost power are also advised to turn off electric cookers, ovens, irons and other household items.
