SNEACHTA: Motorists warned of snowy conditions in Midleton, Castlemartyr and Youghal

By Yay Cork February 10, 2021February 10, 2021

The sneachta has finally arrived.

But while pictures of snow flurries across Cork have been met with delight on social media, road users have been warned to take extra care while driving as frost and ice will be slow to clear today.

According to the AA, snowy conditions have been reported around Midleton, Castlemartyr and Youghal.

“Take caution though on secondary routes, housing estates and sheltered locations around the country, as icy stretches are possible, and allow enough time to fully de-ice your vehicle before setting off.” the AA advised.

According to the latest report from Met Éireann, today will be very cold with sunny spells and isolated wintry showers of sleet or snow. Highest temperatures will reach just 1 to 3 degrees this afternoon.

Widespread sharp frost and icy stretches are forecast for tonight.

“It will be mostly dry with clear spells, though there will be showers of sleet or snow at times.” said the national forecaster.

“Rain, sleet and snow will move into the southwest towards morning. It will become breezy as fresh to strong and gusty southeasterly winds develop. Winds will be very strong near southwest coasts. Lowest temperatures of -3 to +1 degrees.”

A Status Yellow – Snow/Ice warning issued for Munster, Connacht and Leinster will remain in place from 8am on Thursday to 8am on Friday.

Forecasters predict “a band of sleet and snow spreading northeastwards during Thursday giving snow accumulations of up to 5cm in some areas (higher over the mountains), but transitioning to rain in the west and south on Thursday night.”
