Pancake Tuesday: 6 Cork spots where you can flip out on flour and sugar

By Yay Cork February 21, 2020February 21, 2020

We’ve been counting down the days.

Shrove Tuesday is finally here and we are ready and waiting to spend Tuesday, February 25th eating our body weight in pancakes.

In case you’ve forgotten why eggs, flour, lemons and sugar sell out on this day every year, Shrove Tuesday is traditionally the day before the first day of Lent. That means if you’re giving up sugar for the coming 40 days, this is your last chance for a pancake blowout.

Whether you like ’em thin with crispy edges or hefty and stacked high, American style, you’ll find every variety of pancake here in Cork on the big day.

Here are six spots to hit if you’d rather leave the batter-blending to the professionals:

CORK CITY

Vanilla & Co.

CIT LGBT is collaborating with Vanilla & Co Ice Cream Cafe (38 Cook Street, Cork City) this year to host a free Pancake Tuesday Community Gathering from 6.30pm until 8pm. All are welcome but you need to reserve your spot by booking a ticket via Facebook here. Expect pancakes and toppings galore.

Clancy’s

Skip lunch and make a beeline for Clancy’s on Prince’s Street on Tuesday, where you can top your pancake with classic lemon and sugar or go wild with bacon and maple syrup, Nutella and cream or berry compote and creme fraiche.

The Spitjack

Over on Washington Street, they’ll be launching an entire pancake menu at The Spitjack. Start the day with a stack for breakfast from 9am.

Lab 82

Down on the Lower Glanmire Road, they’ve thrown caution to the wind altogether at Lab 82; skip breakfast and nab a seat in the cosy cafe for a Golden Goose: Three American pancakes swimming in chocolate and caramel sauce crowned with chocolate ice cream and a Cadbury’s Creme Egg.

BALLINCOLLIG

The Oriel House Hotel

Order a stack of fluffy pancakes and top them with a selection of naughty addition at The Oriel House Hotel on Tuesday; they’ll be serving them in the Oriel Bar all day long.

COBH

SuperValu

Garvey’s SuperValu in Cobh will be warming up the frying pans from 9am until 6pm on Shrove Tuesday. Find master pancake flipper Darragh in-store for a freshly made pancake and your choice of tasty accompaniments.
