More than 1,000 stylish new apartments are set to be built in Cork’s Docklands

A new city neighbourhood is in the planning stages.
Newly released images show the proposed design for more than 1,000 new apartments set to be built in Cork’s Docklands, along with a new bar and restaurant, shops, a creche, a medical centre and a performance area – all just 1.9km from the city centre.

Marina Quarter Limited is applying for a 10-year planning permission for a mixed-use strategic housing development at The Former Ford Distribution Site, Centre Park Road, Cork.
The planning application, which has been lodged with An Bord Pleanála, comprises 12 blocks of one, two and three-bedroom apartments stretching up to 14 storeys. The architectural design of the scheme makes reference to several design motifs from the Ford factories including concrete frames with large areas of glazing and steel balcony systems.
The site is located adjacent to the new Marina Park, where construction is underway and expected to be completed in 2021. The developers say the scheme will provide a “strong urban edge to the parkland, providing passive supervision of the park and amenity for the residents of the scheme.”

According to the planning applications design statement: “Comparable urban parks which are overlooked by contemporary development include Hyde Park in London, Parc de Bercy in Paris and Herbert Park in Dublin, where heights of some surrounding buildings are 13 storeys, 10 storeys and seven storeys respectively.”
“Although the subject site is separated from the Marina Park by the Monahan Road Extension, the scheme has been designed to provide safe access points between the development and the park.”
