Indie Cork is back with a vast programme that will delight film fans this October

By Yay Cork September 8, 2025September 8, 2025

It’s been a challenging year for the festival.

But the Indie Cork team has overcome the tragic loss of its beloved founding member, Dr. Tony Langlois, who passed away suddenly last October, to create a programme of features, documentaries and shorts he would have been proud of.

Now the BAFTA accredited festival, one of the country’s biggest platforms for independent filmmakers, has launched its 2025 event, running this year from October 5th to 12th at the Arc Cinema in Cork City.

Along with screening a broad array of Irish features, documentaries and shorts, this year’s programme will show a multitude of international films from countries including Ukraine, France, Scotland, Mexico, Argentina and South Korea.

‘Ange’

The opener on October 5th is French film ‘Ange,’ which premiered at Cannes last May, and is directed by the legendary Tony Gatlif. It tells the story of footloose Romani musician Ange, who embarks on a life-affirming journey of self-discovery.

Other highlights of the features programme include ‘White Snail’ which won the Special Jury Prize at Locarno Film Festival in August and ‘Perla’ nominated for awards this year at Rotterdam and Karlovy Vary festivals, and winner of the Audience award at the Diagonale festival in Austria.

A moving tribute

This year, to mark the unique contribution of Dr. Tony Langlois in creating and sustaining the festival, and his nurturing of the music and film communities of Cork, a number of elements of the programme will honour him. A special programme of his films will screen at The Arc Cinema, including his 12 years of festival trailers, for which he composed the soundtracks.

A new album will be launched of music from his collaboration with John Byrne ‘Approaching Topiary.’ The sound artists of Cork will present TANK, an evening of experimental music in his honour on the final day of the festival at The Pav.

Made in Cork

Once again IndieCork will showcase the enormous talent of independent filmmakers from Cork and right across the island of Ireland; with themes exploring a concern for world events as well a strong emphasis on nature and going back to our roots.

Some highlights include ‘Low’ – the first feature-length film from Cork filmmakers Owen Warren (director) and Felix Castaldo (writer). Both Owen and Felix are previous IndieCork winners in the Best Cork Short category. Meanwhile, the Irish language documentary ‘Buried Alive’ explores the 1970s phenomenon of world-record attempts to stay buried in coffins, with the central character a Mitchelstown ex-pat in London.

There is a substantial documentary panorama at the festival, including new Irish documentary ‘Immrám,’ which will have its homecoming screening at IndieCork.

Directed by the Cork director Michael Holly and Belgian director Mieke Vanmechelen, the experimental piece explores the connections between place, language, environment and contemporary life in Ireland. Their previous documentary ‘Hungry Hill’ screened to sold out audiences at IndieCork 2023.

“In what has been a very challenging year for the festival and the people who make it happen, we have in fact created an exceptional programme this year, a testament to the creativity that underlies IndieCork.” said Festival Chairperson Eileen Hogan.

“We’re looking forward to presenting this and giving a valuable opportunity for people to gather and celebrate that indie spirit.”

IndieCork festival runs at the Arc Cinema from October 5th to 12th. The full programme of events will be available soon at indiecork.com.
