Illustrator Fatti Burke is planning a design for one of Cork’s pedestrianised streets

She’s known for her whimsical, best-selling books.
But Waterford illustrator Fatti Burke will be working on her next piece outdoors as part of Open Road, a fun collaboration with the Glucksman and children from diverse communities across Cork city.
The Glucksman invited local kids to work with Burke, author of Irelandopedia, Historopedia and Focloiropedia, on the design and creation of a public artwork that will be unveiled during Cork Midsummer Festival 2021.

The artwork is designed to amplify the voices of children from communities who have less frequent opportunities to engage in cultural, artistic and creative programmes.
The creative sessions led by the artist and the Glucksman team introduced artmaking techniques to children and encouraged them to develop stories and drawings about their dreams. Fatti Burke interpreted the material produced by the children, identifying common themes, concerns and aspirations.
In June, Burke and some young participants will paint their design onto one of Cork’s newly pedestrianised streets for everyone to enjoy.
