Dr. Seuss once wrote a book while staying at this famous Cork hotel

Did you know Dr. Seuss had a Cork connection?
Hold onto your hats, bookworms. We’ve just stumbled upon a delightful nugget of local history that’s sure to tickle your fancy. Turns out, the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss has a strong link to our very own Clonakilty.
The man behind those curiously addictive rhymes, Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss), once graced our shores in the late 1930s.
Dr. Seuss, in his quest for inspiration, chose the picturesque Inchydoney Hotel as his writing retreat. And guess what? He penned the beloved “The King’s Stilts” right there, with the stunning Atlantic as his backdrop.
And here’s the cherry on top: the book is dedicated to “All the Irish Cats and Seagulls in the shores of Inchydoney.”
To celebrate this truly unique connection, the fabulous Liz Twomey, Clonakilty’s very own drama queen (and queen of all pixies, might we add), is hosting a “thing” at Kerr’s Bookshop as part of the new Clonakilty Hearts and Minds Festival on Saturday, March 29th.

We’re not entirely sure what “thing” means, but it’s bound to be a magical and utterly entertaining affair.
Will there be rhymes? Will there be costumes? Will there be a reenactment featuring local cats and seagulls? Who knows! But one thing’s for sure: it’s a celebration of a fascinating piece of Cork history and the genius of Dr. Seuss.
So, grab the kids, dust off your favourite Seuss book, and head to Kerr’s Bookshop – You never know what delightful surprises await.
To quote Dr Seuss: ““You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”
