Discuss your mortality over tea and cake at a pop-up lunchtime Death Café

Listen, nobody gets out alive.
There aren’t many events where you can chat about life’s biggest mystery over tea and cake — but that’s exactly what’s on the cards at Telling the Bees Death Café.
Set to take place in Maureen’s on Mulgrave Road at 1.30pm on Wednesday, April 29th as part of the Lifelong Learning Festival, this gently unusual gathering invites people to sit down, have a cuppa, and talk about something we don’t often make space for: mortality.
But before you picture anything too heavy, this isn’t about doom and gloom — it’s actually about conversation, curiosity, and connection.
Led by Siofra Hegarty of Telling the Bees and the Irish Hospice Foundation, the “death café” is simply a safe, welcoming space where people can openly share their thoughts, questions, fears, and experiences around death. No lectures, no agenda, no pressure — just honest chats in a relaxed, compassionate environment. Think more “kitchen table conversation” than anything clinical or intense.
Whether you’re someone who’s quietly curious about different death practices, have experienced loss and want to talk, or just fancy a meaningful conversation that goes a bit deeper than the usual small talk, you’ll be in good company.
And yes — there will be tea. And cake. Which, let’s be honest, makes any conversation that bit easier.
At its heart, Telling the Bees Death Café is about taking a topic we often avoid and approaching it with warmth, openness, and maybe even a little bit of lightness. Because sometimes, talking about the end can actually help us appreciate everything in between.
