Curious about breakdancing and DJ-ing? This all-ages Cork event is the place to start

It’s never too late to try something new.
And while breakdancing probably isn’t wise if you’ve already got a bus pass and a dickie hip, people of all ages are welcome at an upcoming Hip-Hop and Street Dance Outreach Day happening in Cork next month.
Hip-hop event organisers Top 8 have partnered with a diverse group of artists and collectives for a day-long get-together at The Kino on Saturday, May 6th.

“This is an invitation to everyone – established artists, keen practitioners, and the curious – to dance, DJ, create, communicate, or just spectate, with intimate events giving everyone a chance to learn something new.” say the organisers.
Here’s what’s happening:
- The Street Dance (Breaking and Hip-Hop) workshop will give an introduction to the dance element of Hip-Hop culture, with invited street dance artists explaining and demonstrating the history of the art form, its foundational technique, the role of dance battles within the culture, and Hip-Hop’s strength as a form of authentic expression.
- The Rap & MC Workshop will be an opportunity to learn about the arts of writing, rhyming, cadences, and flow from an invited MC (Microphone Controller), and the role of an MC within Hip-Hop culture.
- The DJ (or Turntablism) workshop – with an exclusive limited capacity of just five people – will offer the chance to learn about the art form of disc jockeying from a leading turntablist, with an introduction to beat matching, basic scratching patterns, and tempo controls.
The day will end with an Over 18’s Social Gathering at Cyprus Avenue, hosted by Outsiders Collective, from 10pm until late.
All events are free, but tickets must booked for all events via top8ight.com.
