County councillor calls for introduction of ‘litter wardens’ on Cork beaches

Could it be that more bins are needed?
Fianna Fáil county councillor Audrey Buckley expressed rage on Twitter, following scenes of people gathering at Cork beaches last weekend.
Buckley tweeted: “So disheartening to see the total disregard people have for our beautiful beaches. I will be asking #corkcountycouncil again, to see if we can get Litter Wardens at weekends like Cork City Council. Time to hit people in their pocket as we have tried everything else.”
She has since appeared on national television, going on Claire Byrne Live to address the litter issue. Later, she wrote: “Let us hope someone is listening.
“Volunteers need HELP we can’t be expected to litter pick every time there is a sunny day. Legislation needs to be looked at and changed to suit the public today. Litter Wardens at weekends would be a great start. More Enforcement.”

However, the flip-side of this argument is that there are not enough bins for people to dispose of their waste.
The introduction of more bins was fiercely ruled out by Cork County Hall Chief Executive Tim Lucey last month, who said “no matter how often we empty our bins, there will be people who will leave their rubbish at the side of a bin which is a disgrace.”
