Green Party councillor Oliver Moran has made a submission to Cork City Council with a view to extending the hours of the ‘Pana ban.’
As things currently stand, the ban prohibits private cars from travelling down Patrick St. between the hours of 3.30pm and 6pm. Moran has suggested that the ban should instead begin “mid-morning.”
Anyone who spends any time in Cork city centre will know that the ban, which is nominally enforced by An Garda Síochána, is ignored regularly. Moran has called for prioritising of bus routes, saying “The NTA will publish pans in early 2022. We need a major culture shift to recognise the priority of sustainable transport over other traffic.”
“Patrick’s St is a major artery for public transport. It needs to be respected as a public transport zone when the NTA publish bus priority plans in 2022.”
Speaking at a meeting of Cork City Council yesterday evening, Moran also called for the introduction of enforcement measures, such as rising bollards and cameras, in order to monitor traffic activity on Patrick St.
